What you need:

We recommend reading The Rainbow Fish before beginning this project.

  • Paper
  • Paintbrush
  • Watercolor
  • Glitter
  • Glue
  • Crayon
  • Jewels

How to make the rainbow fish painting:

Before beginning this project, have a fish drawn in crayon on the paper for little kids. The crayon will resist the paint so the fish will remain visible. Older children can draw their own fish.

paint the fish

Provide watercolors and brushes for your toddler to paint their fish. Encourage them to be creative and cover the whole fish with colors.

Decorate the rainbow Fish painting

Now it’s time to make our fish special like the rainbow fish.

First apply liquid glue where your toddler would like glitter. Then sprinkle the glitter over the page and shake the extra off onto another page to save for later.

Next, give your little one the opportunity to add other jewels, sequins, etc to their fish.

Add finishing touches!

Add any other finishing touches to the fish. Then cut them out and add them to the ocean scene from our Under the Sea lesson plans!
