What you need:

  • Cornstarch
  • Water
  • Bowl
  • Optional: paint, food coloring, beads, animals, etc

How to make oobleck

First, mix water and cornstarch

Start by mixing 1/2 cup water with 3/4 cup cornstarch. At first the mixture will be very difficult to mix, you may have to use your hands. You may have to add a little more water or cornstarch to get the texture you want.

Oobleck is a non-newtonian fluid, which basically means when it is put under pressure it gets harder rather than softer. This is what makes it funny to mix but so super fun to play with!

Add Color and Mix ins

This is where you can get creative! Add food coloring or paint to the mix to change the color. Add beads or sparkles for more sensory fun. Throw in some animals for creative play.

Special Notes About Using Oobleck for Sensory Play With Toddlers:

Now that you know how amazing oobleck is, let me share a few need to know details:

  1. Oobleck can be messy! However, it is super easy to clean up with just water. For this reason, we always use a pan under our oobleck to minimize the mess. And if you can take it outside, do so!
  2. While Oobleck is taste safe, I wouldn’t recommend using this if you have a kiddo that eats everything you put in front of them. However, we did this with Little Miss when she was 1 year old and she loved it, so do what is best for your kiddo!
  3. Oobleck can dry out a little as you play with it. Simply add a little more water and continue playing!

Now go get your oobleck and show us what you can do with it!
